HeadlinesApril 27, 2001: A lot of things have happened since the last update. I just don't have the time to update the website. Still, the resources and collected links will be available. Important links that should be here can always be submitted, and I'll fix them when I have the time. Other than that, the site will only be updated sporadically unless someone would like to give me a hand - I will create a mirror site at home.no.net/rcrowe. Thanks for stopping by! January 3, 2001: Russell Crowe has been nominated for the 2001 Golden Globe for best actor in a drama movie. Gladiator has received several nominations. Check out IMDb's Road to the Oscars for more information. December 26, 2000: [BBC News] In a review of the movie year, BBC News writes "Crowe went on to scale new heights in 2000 as Maximus, "the general who became a slave", in Gladiator - the best of the nostalgia movies and, for many, the film of the year." Read the whole story [ here ]. December 15, 2000: [Total Film] Russell Crowe has been voted Man of the Year in the British film magazine Total Film. Five pages in the magazine are dedicated to Crowe. "He's dangerous because he's always thinking", the headline says. The article from Total Film is now posted in the Interviews & Articles section along with quotes to go with it. December 13, 2000: From the People Board, Liz Smith: "And - surprise, surprise - Russell Crowe stepped up in person to be named male star of the year. (There is no indeterminate gender award; the Hollywood Women are sedate.) Russell looked a bit bored, grouchy and irritated when asked to pose for pictures. But his speech was short and sweet: "I've had an interesting little year or two. Thank you for giving me your Golden Apple, and I'm going to work out some way of consuming it!" (Nobody dared breathe the name "Meg" around Russell that day.)" September 20, 2000: Sunday's LA Times Parade Magazine in the "Personality Parade" section, a reader asks the question: "In your opinion, who are the 10 best male actors in Hollywood today?" The response: "Readers may be surprised that we're skipping the usual suspects: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Harrison Ford. In our opinion, they're no longer doing their best work. We pick (in alphabetical order) Russell Crowe, Tom Cruise, Ralph Fiennes, Gene Hackman, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Samuel L. Jackson, Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey and Denzel Washington. Such a list is subjective, of course." September 16, 2000: [Hola.es] The Spanish site hola.es has pictures of Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan along with a story (in Spanish). Direct link [ here ]. September 12, 2000: [Daily Telegraph] RUSSELL Crowe's album with his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts will hit the shelves around Christmas time. Insiders are tipping the folksy-bluesy-rock album, Bastard Life of Clarity, will silence any critics. The vibes about the album, recorded in Texas, are very good. The band's gigs in Texas last month sold out with tickets going for as much as $500 a pop and USA Today comparing Crowe to an "Aussie John Mellencamp". September 10, 2000: [] Guy Pearce, Jim's costar in Monte Cristo, can't stop regaling the cast and crew with tales of Russell Crowe, his costar in L.A. Confidential. No secret that Guy isn't a fan of the Thighmaster. G.P.'s been telling folks that Crowe head-butted him on the set of the flick that made Mr. Crowe oh-so-in-demand. "Why'd you do that?" Pearce asked. "To get your attention," explained Crowe. "Well, next time, try, 'Hey, Guy,' " Pearce said. (Far too civilized an approach for the fisty dude, I'm sure.) September 10, 2000: [Calendarlive] The "You Should Show Your Legs More Often" Award: The gams-down winner is Russell Crowe. As with Clooney and Wahlberg in "The Perfect Storm," the Australian-born actor ("L.A. Confidential," "The Insider") was a major star waiting to happen, and the toga-and-sandals epic "Gladiator" was his ticket, boosting his asking price overnight to $15 million a film. Starring in the second- biggest hit of the summer (behind "M:I-2"), Crowe brought a heroic conviction to what could have easily been an exercise in high camp, inheriting the classical stoicism mantle of Charlton Heston -- complete with his signature snarl. Online] The Eyes Have At It: Russell Crowe, pumping away (iron, for a change) at the Powerhouse Gym in Austin, Tejas. The actor, rock star and marriage-meanderer started his grueling workout with a sparring match straight out of Gladiator and went on to some free weights and heavy-duty flirting. Crowe chatted up a leggy blonde while flashing his pearly whites for all the fitness-minded folk. The Thighmaster was unshaven and clad in a baseball cap and farm-hand type workout clothes. Needing some training from Russ-babe soon will be... September 3, 2000: From an entertainment newsletter: "SO, WHO IS THIS RUSSELL CROWE GUY ANYWAY? American moviegoers are familiar with Russell Crowe's work by now, in such major pictures as "Gladiator," "The Insider" and "L.A. Confidential." Now, they also know him as the guy who apparently swiped Meg Ryan from Dennis Quaid. Other than that, Crowe's personality is not particularly well known to the public. The current issue of Movieline magazine offers a sign that Crowe -- in the manner of fellow Australian actor Mel Gibson -- places a high premium on being a regular kind of guy. For example, he says, "I'd move to Los Angeles if Australia and New Zealand were swallowed up by a huge tidal wave, if there was a bubonic plague in England." What's the attraction down under? Crowe says: "In Australia they treat you like a piece of furniture. Your mates are your mates and the folks who hate your dark and bloody guts, they don't change their minds."" No... it will NOT be a rental priced disc. That's complete hogwash and this word is official. Also, there will be no two versions of the disc, one in November and one next year, as has also been rumored. There will just be the one damn-fine, 2-disc SE in November. It will include the film, deleted scenes, a commentary and more, as well as sound in Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1. So you can all relax." More info on the Australian DVD version can be found [ here ]. August 23, 2000: Russell Crowe fans from Australia can enjoy a special on Russell, Friday, 7.30pm on Channel 10. August 16, 2000: [News of the World] Drunk makes mug of Meg - Gladiator Russell Crowe kept cool when a tipsy fan intruded on his romantic dinner with girlfriend Meg Ryan at swanky London restaurant the Mirabelle last week. The drunk banged into Mr C and blurted out; "She's lovely, you're a lucky man." He then added; "Oi MEL, leave Antonio and stick with Russell, he's the man." The 'fan' had mistaken Meg for Melanie Griffith, who's married to Antonio Banderas. Doh! The red-faced couple smiled politely and the drunk went back to his table He then sent them a bottle of the dearest port in the house costing a cool £3,500-which was sent back quicker than you can say When Harry Met Sally. August 13, 2000: The Norwegian magazine Filmmagasinet doesn't really seem to be updated on Russell Crowe and his music. This is their latest story about him: "Directing, rock and Meg Ryan! The Gladiator star Russell Crowe is hot nowadays. During the preparations of Flora Plum, the tabloids enjoyed his close relationship to the director Jodie Foster. During the shooting of Proof of Life, he started a hot romance with Meg Ryan - who promptly divorced her husband Dennis Quaid. And now the talented actor plans on doing his directorial debut with the drama A Course in Miracles, along with starting up a career as a country rock artist! The debut concerts of his band (also called 30 Odd Foot of Grunts) were sold out in less than an hour - and according to the concert manager David Derrick, the tickets were bought by mostly women. "The whole place will be full of ladies," Derrick said before the concerts, "but I don't think they will be there to listen to his music..." Crowe and co perform in Austin, Texas in August, for a total of 43,000 fans..." August 13, 2000: [Filmmagasinet] A Norwegian comedian says this when asked which was the most recent movie he saw: "Actually, I went to see Gladiator, which definitely was a positive experience. It was kind of back to the good, old boy movies, where everything was the way they should be. It was a bit funny - because Dagbladet's [a Norwegian newspaper] reviewer - it must have been Liv Jørgensen who wrote that the movie was too violent and bloody. And that's correct. There is an upsetting lack of non-violent gladiator movies with long, dwelling scenes. Someone ought to do pull themselves together and do something about this ridiculous thing!" August 12, 2000: [Talk Magazine] Nicole Kidman has this to say about Russell: "TALK MAGAZINE: Russel's a bit of a rager, isn't he?" "KIDMAN: He has a very, very deep soul, I must say, and he is truly one of my dearest friends. He is loyal beyond belief and we've spent almost every New Year's Eve together for the last few years -- Tom and Russell and I." August 12, 2000: [E! Online] writes this about Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe: "Meg Ryan may need a pick-me-up after hearing about this next item. Word from Russell Crowe's own people (all of whom, naturally, requested that elixir I dole out by the gallon--anonymity) is that the beefy boy from Down Under is under no misconception that he's found true love with Dennis Quaid's wife. "Her days are numbered," said a gal who's on Mr. Crowe's payroll. (Hmmm, must not be a paycheck with too many zeroes on it, huh?) "Russell's eyes are already starting to wander," added another chick who works for the strapping lad. Two suggestions, Mr. Thighs: (1) I think a couple of raises are in order, unless you want the stuff I couldn't repeat to find its way to someone less discreet than I (those creatures do exist--hard to believe, I know), and (2) Never mind. You need sexuality instruction from me like I need bad-boy-behavior training from you. Play it safe, stud! August 8, 2000: [Entertainment Weekly] DreamWorks confirms that it's upcoming DVD of the sanddal-rific Russell Crowe hit, tentatively scheduled for late November, will be a two-disc affiar - and presumably packed with extras. August 8, 2000: This was taken from a Turkish newspaper article from joaquin Phoenix (costarring as commodus in Gladiator) about Russell Crowe: "About his relationship with Russell Crowe he says: It was the opposite of the relationship in the script. Actually Russell isn’t very talkative. He memorizes his part incredibly well and is very meticulous. Even if Ridley was pleased with a particular scene, if Russell was not sure about it , he’d do the same scene again and again until he had found the perfection he was looking for. Apart from that, he’s a great person. He’s very confident and imperturbable." August 3, 2000: [Gruntland] Due to the great response in Austin, we have decided to move our show from the indoor room at Stubb's to the outdoor ampitheatre. This means extra tickets will be available for the first show on Friday 4th. They will be on sale from 1.00pm, Thursday 3rd August only from Stubb's box office. A limit of 4 tickets per person applies. This picture was taken in London, where he's shooting his new movie "Proof of Life". The underwater scenes were shot at the Sheraton Skyline Hotel swimming pool, where Russell found time to do a few push-ups during a smoke break. His co-star in the movie is Meg Ryan, rumoured to be the new woman in his life. It seems she's got quite a bit more of him to love." August 1, 2000: Screenwriter's Utopia has a review of the Proof of Life script. The link is in the filmography section and [ here ]. Note that there are spoilers in the review. |
