This article is taken from Fair Lady, a women's magazine in South Africa. Thanks to Aruana of the CrowePeople mailing list for typing it in. SOMETHING TO CROWE ABOUTMeg Ryan (38), the woman responsible for bringing the fake female orgasm into the mainstream, had until recently, what insiders described as one of the more durable marriages in Tinseltown. But now her nine year union with Dennis Quaid (46) is over. Since Quaid filed for divorce at the end of June, the Hollywood rumour mill has been grinding overtime. Actor Russell Crowe (36) has been cited as the "other man", even though Ryan and Quaid's publicist insists they'd split amicably six weeks before Ryan was seen schmoozing with Crowe in London, where they were finishing filming the romantic drama Proof of Life. Crowe, who played the muscle-bound Maximus in the hit film Gladiator, is known as a demanding actor with attitude to spare, a ladies' man and a bar brawler. The tabloids are having a field day, asking questions about how long this new relationship will last and wondering what's got into Hollywood's golden girl. Even Meg's estranged mother, Sandy Jordan, has added her five cents' worth, saying her daughter's affair may have destroyed her sweet-girl-next-door image. "Meg stayed in her marriage to protect her image." She says. "She's America's sweetheart and that person can't have an affair." Other theories as to the reason for the split abound. Ryan is said to be leaving Quaid because he's not her intellectual equal - a friend of Ryan's told People magazine that, during their relationship, he had "failed to grow". Yet this is the same man of whom Ryan was once quoted as saying, "I just can't believe the number of things he's incredibly good at. He never stops being interesting to me." Some sources say the marriage collapsed after a furious public bust-up over Quaid's constant flirting, while other reports have it that Quaid, aware of Ryan's interest in Crowe, asked her to quit the movie and, when she refused, became angry and filed for divorce. Insiders say there was also career tension: Ryan has had huge success, while Quaid's latest project, the sci-fi thriller Frequency, bombed in the US. Few saw the split coming - as recently as March Ryan said of Quaid, "He's an amazing actor and father. We're a great team". Back to the previous page |
