The Wit and Wisdom of Russell Crowe
ON HIS HERITAGE:
"Aaah, the Welsh. My grandfather was from Wrexham. Such a combination of things. There's Maori in there, there's Italian, Scottish... There's a lot of things fighting for attention. All of them warrior races."
ON LA:
"I don't like the pervasive desire within this business to make you move into the office with them. It makes them feel better. It's like: 'Remember - we have the money'. It's unhealthy to live there full-time, but kinda fun to pop in occasionally and see the freaks."
ON MOVING CLOSER TO HOLLYWOOD:
"I'd move to Los Angeles if Australia and New Zealand were swallowed up by a huge tidal wave, if there was a bubonic plague in England, and if the continent of Africa disappeared from some huge Martian attack."
ON HIS BIG WELCOME:
"When I made LA Confidential, Curtis Hanson protected me from the studio, which wanted to have me kicked off that film right up until the last second before we started shooting. They stopped paying my hotel bills, and just generally made it very obvious that I should fuck off."
ON NOT PLAYING THE HOLLYWOOD GAME:
"I auditioned for The Shawshank Redemption, and I never even got to meet the director. I talked to the casting director and his producer, stated my case and left the room. The producer chased after me and said: 'You've got to get smart, kid. You can't just come into meetings and be that honest, because no one is going to care. My advice is - use an American accent and never let them know that youære not from Idaho.' I told her that if I could con a director into giving me a role, I wouldn't want to work with him, because I'd believe he was fucking stupid. When I meet a director who understands what the job of acting is, then I'll work with him."
ON HIS OSCAR NOMINATION FOR THE INSIDER:
"I don't have a cynical opinion of it. I'm really very appreciative. I'm an Academy Award-nominated actor for the rest of my career - no matter what shit I do from here on."
ON A SUGGESTION THAT HE DOESN'T PLAY PARTICULARLY LIKEABLE CHARACTERS:
"I like villains, because there's something so attractive about a committed person. They have a plan, an ideology, they're motivated. Still, I think it's kind of pretentious to sit there and say: 'I only dance on the edge!', because that's not the human condition."
ON OBSESSIVELY PREPARING FOR HIS ROLES:
"If you're playing a pirate, you need the fucking eyepatch."
